The Westfire Stair Parts 4092 Box Newel Post is a robust and elegant architectural component designed primarily as a starting newel for staircases, adding a touch of sophistication and stability to both wood and metal balustrades.
Below is a detailed description based on available information:

Design and Construction
  • Style: The 4092 is a classic early American-style box newel post, characterized by its formal and decorated appearance. It features lock-mitered corners, ensuring no visible end grains for a seamless, elegant look and enhanced structural integrity.
  • Pedestal Base: The pedestal measures 7-1/2 inches x 7-1/2 inches, providing a substantial footprint for stability. The pedestal wall is 3/4 inches thick and 23 inches tall.
  • Shank and Cap: The main shank is 6 x 6 inches in (net). The post is topped with a 7 x 7 x 3-inch tall pitched or peaked hat, adding a distinctive decorative element.
  • Overall Dimensions: Standard height is 55 inches, with options for 63 inches or 72 inches (available by custom quote). The post has a weight of approximately 30 lbs and overall dimensions of 7-1/2 x 7-1/2 x 55 inches (width x depth x height).
  • Construction: This is a hollow box newel, Amish-made in the USA, crafted with precision to ensure tight corners and solid joinery. The hollow design reduces weight while maintaining strength.
Material and Finish Options
  • Standard Wood Species: Stocked in Red Oak and Poplar, which are ideal for staining or painting. Poplar is particularly noted for its tight grain, making it a cost-effective choice for paint-grade applications or dark staining to mimic walnut, mahogany, or Brazilian cherry.
  • Non-Stocked Wood Species: Available in a variety of woods, including Soft MapleBeechWhite OakMahoganyHard MapleAmerican CherryBrazilian CherryHickoryBirchAlderAsh, and Walnut. These are made to order with a 3-4 week lead time.
  • Primed Option: The 4092 is available primed with Sherwin-Williams primer, ready to accept oil-based or latex paint. Trim and cap wood species can be customized in this option.
  • Finish: Shipped unfinished, sanded, and ready for staining or painting, allowing customization to match your staircase or interior decor. Minimal sanding may be required for touch-up.
Variations
The 4092 series offers versatility with multiple design options:
  • Plain: Smooth, unadorned surface for a clean, traditional look.
  • Fluted: Features vertical grooves for added texture.
  • Flat Panel (FP-4092): Incorporates flat panels for a modern or mission-style aesthetic.
  • Raised Panel (RP-4092): Features raised panels for a more ornate, classic appearance.
  • Actual Flat/Raised Panels: Authentic panel designs for specific stylistic needs.
  • Half-Newel: Available for wall-mounted applications at 70% of the standard post cost.
Installation
  • Purpose: Typically used as a starting newel at the base of a staircase, but also suitable for landing or intermediate positions when paired with complementary styles like the 4091, 4075, or 4375.
  • Mounting: Requires a mounting block (sold separately, e.g., Newel Mount Block) for secure installation. Recommended hardware includes:
    • 3101 Sure-Tite Newel Fastener
    • 3301 Rail & Post Fastening Kit
  • Interior Use: Designed exclusively for indoor applications, providing support for stair and balcony handrail systems.
