Hickory post
When i paid for this newel post, I thought I was buying one piece of hickory. This post is several boards laminated together. They should state that but they do not. The finish is sloppy and the visible glue is not what I thought I was buying. Westfire's responce: Robert, it is an industry standard to glue-laminate all newel posts. Hardwood pieces are glue-laminated rather than solid to improve dimensional stability, significantly reducing warping, twisting, and splitting. Lamination increases strength by dispersing natural wood defects, allows for longer or custom shapes, and uses smaller, sustainable trees. It also creates a more consistent, uniform, and durable product. Key Reasons for Lamination vs. Solid 4x4s: Superior Stability: Solid timbers often warp, check (crack), or twist as they dry, particularly in thick dimensions. Laminated pieces are made of kiln-dried wood, making them far more stable. Increased Strength: Glue-laminated timber (glulam) distributes natural defects like knots throughout the member, resulting in higher, more consistent structural capacity compared to solid timber, where a single knot can create a weak point. Reduced Splitting: By bonding smaller, stable pieces together, the internal stress is minimized, preventing the large, deep cracks often seen in solid 4x4 posts.
